What is URL Encoding?
URL encoding (also known as percent-encoding) is a mechanism used to encode information in a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). URLs can only contain a limited set of ASCII characters (alphanumeric characters and a few unreserved symbols). Any reserved or special character—such as spaces, ampersands (&), question marks (?), or slash symbols (/)—must be encoded into a percent sign followed by hexadecimal values.
Why is URL Encoding Necessary?
- Prevents Syntax Errors: Ensures that web servers interpret query string parameters correctly without breaking link structures.
- Handles Special Characters: Safely transmits characters outside the standard ASCII set (including foreign characters and emojis).
- Security & Data Integrity: Protects data passed via GET parameters in HTTP requests.
